SIMPLE PAST - PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE – use of FOR and SINCE
1. The Simple Past refers to an action that happened at a definite time in the past:
EX:
She went to Los Angeles in 2002
He won a gold medal when he was 24
Time expressions used with Simple Past: yesterday, in 1997..., last month/year.., two weeks/three years ago
2. The Present Perfect ( have/has + past participle of the verb) refers to an action which happened at an indefinite time. It connects the past and the present. It can describe something that started and finished in the past but we don't specify when
She has written three emails
They have made five albums
I've visited london and Edinburgh
The Present Perfect expresses an experience as part of someone's life
Tom has travelled a lot in Africa. They've lived all over the world
Time expressions used with Present Perfect : ever-never-just-already- (not)...yet
3. The Present Perfect expresses an action or state which began in the past and continues to the present.
I've known Alice for six years. She has lived here since 1998
FOR: with a period of time
SINCE: with a point in time
