WATER: A BASIC RIGHT-esercitazione III prova

WATER: A BASIC RIGHT

Two thirds of the Earth's surface is covered by water, but only 2,5% of this is fresh water. In many countries in the world there isn't enough water and the situation is going to get worse. It is believed that climate change will lead to more droughts and cause a 20% increase in water scarcity, especially in the Middle East, Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, and at the same time the world's population will increase. Some people think that, in the future, water will be so precious that there will be water wars. Yet today there is enough water in the world for home, farms and factories.
The basic problem is the unequal distribution and bad management of water: basically the rich have enough, while the poor do not. According to the World Health Organisation, all people should have a minimum of 20 litres of water a day; in Europe people use 200 litres and in the USA 400 litres. But at present 1,1 billion people in the developing countries do not have enough water. What is really shocking is that water is sometimes more expensive for poor people: for example, those living in slums in Indonesia or Kenya pay more for water than people in London or New York. This is because their house are not connected to water networks, so they have to buy water from vendors.
Yet there are ways of solving the problem: creating more effective irrigation systems; reducing water pollution; promoting international collaboration to distribute water more fairly. Some countries such as Colombia, Morocco and Uganda have adopted innovative strategies and have achieved improvement in access to water. But not enough is being done. To quote the UNESCO Human Development Report 2006: “Like hunger, deprivation in access to water is a silent crisis experienced by the poor and tolerated by those with resources, the technology and the political power to end it.”

Answer the following question with your own words as far as possible.

1. Why could there be water wars in the future? (Max 8 lines)

2. Why do poor people sometimes pay a lot for water? ( Max 6 lines)

3. How could the situation be improved? (Max 8 lines)

Use and @buse of the Internet- esercitazione III prova

Use and @buse of the Internet

Since the early 1990s the Internet has changed our lives significantly because it has proved to be the fastest and cheapest way to communicate with over 900 million people in more than 100 countries all over the world, find and share information and images of all types selected from an online database. By the beginning of the new century it has become the printing press of the technology era. Whether in homes, business, schools, computers are potentially more powerful than ever because they can be linked to virtually any source of stored information through modems converting data, like photos and text into electronic signs and as many as 10 million World Wide Web pages appear on the home computer screen.
Now people produce and consume in a single networked global system and increasingly have access to the same movies, home videos, data, music, ideas, goods and, unfortunately, pornographic material as well, in particular information on child- prostitution networks. With the intrenet the pornography appears instantly: in a short time you have the photos you want; moreover, pedophiles can exchange names and addresses freely, taking advantage of the absence of specific laws on the matter. Cyberspace is a popular passage for this kind of materials because it is difficult to detect. Internet usage will certainly grow every year: the Internet will be even more central to everything we are doing. Soon there will be more Net-enabled phones, TV sets and cars, but punishment for abusers and protection for vulnerable categories like children will have to be enforced even sooner.

Answer the following questions with your own words as far as possible.

1. How has the Internet changed our lives? (Max 8 lines)

2. Why are computers more powerful than before? (Max 6 lines)

3. How is there an abuse of the Internet? (Max 6 lines)

Mi scuso in
in versione italiana

English version

Dear students,

attached you will find two texts with questions. Please read them and
try to answer  the questions.

I remind you that the objective
of the "3° prova" is to understand a short text and answer the questions with
your own words as far as possible. In particular be careful to the following:

Focus
on what  the question requests. Do not
wander off the subject

If you
find it difficult to use different words, try to put the sentences in a
slightly different or simplier way. Do not use long sentences and do not repeat
the same things

Pay
attention to grammatical aspects (verbs, pronouns, concordances, etc..)

If you
know about the subject and you want to add a personal opinion about it, you
can, of course, express your idea but after answering to what the question asks

There is no deadline for this homework. You can use these texts to
practise for the “3 prova” and you can send it back to me whenever you want.

Since I would  like to review and
analyse the text “
Water: a
basic right
on Thursday 16th April (after Easter Holidays), I ask you all (especially  the students who won't do the homework and send it back
to me) to come to the lesson having read this text so that you know what we are
going to talk about.

PS: I would also like to know how difficult you find these texts: very
difficult / quite difficult / not very difficult / easy.         Thank you

Regards

Versione italiana

rielaborazione personale). In modo particolare dovete stare attenti a:

centrare

semplice. (Anche questa è rielaborazione personale)

Fate
attenzione agli aspetti gtrammaticali (verbi, tempi verbali, pronomi,
concordanze ecc..)

sia la precisa domanda “What do you think of...?” oppure “What is your idea
about...?”.

“Water: a basic right” giovedì 16 Aprile, chiedo a tutti (soprattutto a coloro

Buon lavoro
