WATER: A BASIC RIGHT-esercitazione III prova

WATER: A BASIC RIGHT

Two thirds of the Earth's surface is covered by water, but only 2,5% of this is fresh water. In many countries in the world there isn't enough water and the situation is going to get worse. It is believed that climate change will lead to more droughts and cause a 20% increase in water scarcity, especially in the Middle East, Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, and at the same time the world's population will increase. Some people think that, in the future, water will be so precious that there will be water wars. Yet today there is enough water in the world for home, farms and factories.
The basic problem is the unequal distribution and bad management of water: basically the rich have enough, while the poor do not. According to the World Health Organisation, all people should have a minimum of 20 litres of water a day; in Europe people use 200 litres and in the USA 400 litres. But at present 1,1 billion people in the developing countries do not have enough water. What is really shocking is that water is sometimes more expensive for poor people: for example, those living in slums in Indonesia or Kenya pay more for water than people in London or New York. This is because their house are not connected to water networks, so they have to buy water from vendors.
Yet there are ways of solving the problem: creating more effective irrigation systems; reducing water pollution; promoting international collaboration to distribute water more fairly. Some countries such as Colombia, Morocco and Uganda have adopted innovative strategies and have achieved improvement in access to water. But not enough is being done. To quote the UNESCO Human Development Report 2006: “Like hunger, deprivation in access to water is a silent crisis experienced by the poor and tolerated by those with resources, the technology and the political power to end it.”

Answer the following question with your own words as far as possible.

1. Why could there be water wars in the future? (Max 8 lines)

2. Why do poor people sometimes pay a lot for water? ( Max 6 lines)

3. How could the situation be improved? (Max 8 lines)

Use and @buse of the Internet- esercitazione III prova

Use and @buse of the Internet

Since the early 1990s the Internet has changed our lives significantly because it has proved to be the fastest and cheapest way to communicate with over 900 million people in more than 100 countries all over the world, find and share information and images of all types selected from an online database. By the beginning of the new century it has become the printing press of the technology era. Whether in homes, business, schools, computers are potentially more powerful than ever because they can be linked to virtually any source of stored information through modems converting data, like photos and text into electronic signs and as many as 10 million World Wide Web pages appear on the home computer screen.
Now people produce and consume in a single networked global system and increasingly have access to the same movies, home videos, data, music, ideas, goods and, unfortunately, pornographic material as well, in particular information on child- prostitution networks. With the intrenet the pornography appears instantly: in a short time you have the photos you want; moreover, pedophiles can exchange names and addresses freely, taking advantage of the absence of specific laws on the matter. Cyberspace is a popular passage for this kind of materials because it is difficult to detect. Internet usage will certainly grow every year: the Internet will be even more central to everything we are doing. Soon there will be more Net-enabled phones, TV sets and cars, but punishment for abusers and protection for vulnerable categories like children will have to be enforced even sooner.

Answer the following questions with your own words as far as possible.

1. How has the Internet changed our lives? (Max 8 lines)

2. Why are computers more powerful than before? (Max 6 lines)

3. How is there an abuse of the Internet? (Max 6 lines)

READING COMPREHENSION – CLASSWORK – December 2008

IF YOU CAN'T LEARN ENGLISH, TRY GLOBISH

It happens all the time: during an airport delay the man to the left, a Korean, starts talking to the man opposite, who is perhaps Colombian. Soon they start chatting in a language that seems to be English. But the native English speaker who is sitting between them can't understand a word.

They don't know it, but the Korean and the Colombian are speaking a form of Globish, the latest addition to the 6,800 languages that are spoken around the world. Globish was invented by a French man, Jean Paul Nerrière. Nerrière is quick to point out that it is not a proper language. “it's not a language. It's a tool”, he says. “A language is the vehicle of a culture. Globish doesn't want to be that. It is just a means of communication, a means of simplifying the language and giving it rules so it can be understood by all”.

The main principles of Globish are a vocabulary of only 1,500 words in English ( the Oxford English Dictionary lists 615,000), plus gestures and repetitions. “The point”, says Narrière “is to reach the threshold of understanding”.

The idea for Globish came from the 1980s when Narrière worked for IBM in Paris with collegues of about 40 nationalities. At a meeting where they were waiting to be addressed by two Americans, they started talking in what Narrière calls “une certaine forme d'anglais perverti”. Then the Americans arrived and after their opening phrases “Call me Bill”, “Call me Jim” no one understood a word. Neither did Jim or Bill understand the perverted English.

Narrière sees a great future for Globish, which he has trademarked. He has written a book Parlez Globish and, since its publication, his website has had many thousands of visitors.

Answer the following questions

1.

Read the title of the article. What do you think the origin of the word “Globish” is?
2.

Why does the inventor of Globish say that it is not a proper language?
3.

How many words are there in Globish? Is it formed only by words?
4.

What is the target of a Globish speaker?
5.

What gave Nerrière the idea for Globish?

Possible answers

1.

The word “Globish” comes from the combination of the words Global and English. Global refers to the fact that this language is spoken all over the world and English refers to the most popular language spoken in the world, in particular English as the international business language.

2.

A language has got its own rules and it's the vehicle of the culture of a country; a language helps to create the identity of a country. Globish doesn't belong to any country in particular, it's simply a means of communication. It's a simplified language with few rules so that it can be understood by people.

3.

Globish has got a vocabulary of about 1,500 words in English and it is formed by gestures and repetitions, which help in the understanding of what people say.

4.

The target of the Globish speaker is to “reach the threshold of understanding”. Since Globish is a common means of communication and a simplified language with few words and with lots of repetitions and gestures, the speaker wants to be able to communicate easily with other people and to understand what the others say.

5.

He had the idea of Globish when he was working at IBM with collegues of about 40 different nationalities. They all spoke an imperfect and “strange” form of English, and apparently no one could understand a word. But Narrière thought that all the peolpe at that IBM meeting were able to communicate in a certain way and he decided to study Globish as a new means of communication.

eBay's rise to world fame

If we want to imagine what companies of the future will be like, we have to look at how eBay works: no factory plant, limited human resources, total globalisation.

The minimum number of staff with the maximum amount of profit.

eBay is the fastest growing e-company in the American market. Over the last seven years, its revenue has risen from $5.7 million to $ 4.55 billion. Not even Microsoft, Dell, Yahoo or Cisco have grown as rapidly.

eBay was launched by Pierre Omydyar on 4th September 1995 and it appeared under the more prosaic title of “Auction Web”. This software engineer living in California wanted to create a new kind of online trading system. The idea was to attract visitors to its auction site where they could offer their own items for sale and bid for items on offer.

The opening day was not a success. In fact the site attracted no visitors at all in its first 24 hours. Within a few weeks, however, about 50 items were already on sale, including a warehouse in Idaho and a 1937 Rolls-Royce. By the end of 1995, several thousand auctions, attracting more than 10,000 bids, had taken place.

Today eBay has more than 157 million users in 34 different countries. The company has 11,600 employees and a further 430,000 people earn their income by trading on the site. In addition to the auction site, eBay also opened an e-commerce site in 2006, ebay express , where companies could sell their new products for a fixed price. The site was open to all companies and allows small and medium companies to compete with leading retailers and sell their products to a huge market of people throughout the world. In early 2008 eBay express closed since so many featueres from eBay express have been integrated and improved onto the original eBay.com.

(source: BBC News)

Answer the following questions

  1. Why is eBay considered to represent the future for business enterprises?

  2. Was eBay launched under this title?

  3. Was it an immediate success? Why?

  4. What was the difference between eBay.com and eBay express?

  5. What advantages do companies or sellers who sell online on eBay have?

  6. Can you translate the title of the article into Italian?

[continua]
